Uzbek transport system becomes part of “New logistics” of Eurasia

The North-South transport corridor, passing through Uzbekistan, should become a key element of the transport system of Eurasia in the context of the formation of “new logistics”, experts of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) said.

The EDB report on the development of the International Transport Corridor (ITC) contains recommendations from experts on creating favorable conditions for international freight traffic, harmonizing customs procedures and coordinating the activities of the ITC.

ITC “North-South” connects the countries of the EAEU, South Asia, East Africa and the Middle East by the shortest and most convenient routes.

It also provides a logistical choice of one of three routes for the delivery of containers, grain, metals, woodworking products, food and other goods. All three routes – Western (through the Republic of Azerbaijan), Eastern (through the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan) and Trans-Caspian (through seaports in the Caspian Sea) – have capacity reserves.

The eastern route involves the territory of Uzbekistan. In particular, the highway Shalkar-Bozoi-Uzbekistan will reach the border of the republic. This project will allow the development of transport links along the connecting directions of the East-West and North-South corridors. This will increase the speed and safety of cargo movement along the route.

The Darbaza-Mataaral railway line under construction will connect Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan with Iran, which reduces the transit distance between the countries of Central Asia.

A branch of the ITC “North-South” – the Turkmenabat-Mary line – connects Iran and Uzbekistan through Turkmenistan. According to the bank’s specialists, the line needs electrification and modernization. This will increase the speed and capacity of the line and improve its environmental performance.
