Tajikistan hopes to complete its segment of CASA-1000 project by year end

Tajikistan announced to complete the construction of the CASA-1000 energy project on its territory by the end of 2022.

“Tajikistan intends to complete the construction of all power lines within the framework of the CASA-1000 project on its territory by the end of the year,” project manager in Tajikistan, Faizali Samiev told. He said that almost all construction work on the Tajik section has been completed, about 5-7% is left.

All the necessary equipment for the construction has already been purchased and installed by 70%.

It remained to complete the installation of some of the equipment and commissioning, as well as testing, which cannot be carried out without the readiness of the countries participating in the project, Samiev believes.

He also noted that the project is being implemented in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan. In Afghanistan, the project was suspended due to a change of government in August 2021 and followed by the decision of the World Bank to suspend funding.

According to Samiev’s estimates, the project on the Afghan section, through which only one line passes, completed, by about 50%. On the territory of Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan, the progress of the project implementation is estimated at the level of 50 to 60%.

“The total length of power lines in Tajikistan is 280 km, Afghanistan – 570 km, Kyrgyzstan – 450 km, a small part falls on the territory of Pakistan,” Samiev said. He added that the total amount of the project in Tajikistan is $348 million.
The CASA-1000 project provides for the transmission of electricity from the countries of Central Asia to South Asia and passed through such countries as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The implementation of the project is carried out at the expense of sponsorship of international organizations and funds allocated by the project participants.

The participating countries of the CASA-1000 project are Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The total length of the lines of the entire project is 1,227 km. The cost of the entire project is $1,086 million, for which funds were allocated by the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
