Presidents Putin and Mirziyoyev discuss preparations for SCO summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. They discussed preparations for the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which will be held in Samarkand in September. The leaders of the two countries also discussed issues of further development of Russian-Uzbek cooperation, the Kremlin press service said, without giving details.

The SCO includes China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Iran and Belarus are in the process of joining the organization. Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also expected to receive dialogue partner status at the September summit. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia and Nepal claim the status of an observer at the SCO (it is higher than the status of a dialogue partner). On August 19, the secretaries of the security councils of the SCO countries met in Tashkent, where they discussed the agenda for the upcoming summit, Russian Kommersant newspaper reported.

Last several years the interest to the SCO has bees increasing and the organization’s influence is growing in the world. The main members and founders of the SCO are Russia and China. The SCO was established in 2001 in China’s Shanghai city by six countries – China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
