Over 20 politicians and activists detained in Kyrgyzstan

About 20 human rights activists and politicians were detained in Kyrgyzstan. All of them opposed the decision of the country’s authorities to transfer the Kempir-Abad reservoir to Uzbekistan, Kloop reported.

Among those detained are former member of the Constitutional Court and presidential candidate Klara Sooronkulova, human rights activist Rita Karasartova, former CEC member Gulnara Jurabaeva, former Prosecutor General Azimbek Beknazarov, former head of the State Committee for National Security Keneshbek Duishebaev and others.

The homes of several politicians and activists were searched.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan stated that it suspects the detainees of preparing mass riots.

In the course of special investigative actions, evidence was obtained about the involvement of individuals in organizing and preparing for mass riots, followed by an illegal seizure of power, the ministry stressed.

The Kempir-Abad reservoir is located at the junction of the Osh and Jalalabad regions of Kyrgyzstan and the Andijan region of Uzbekistan. In early October, the Kyrgyz authorities announced that they would exchange several sites with Uzbekistan, and, in particular, they would transfer the reservoir. At the same time, residents of Kyrgyzstan should have direct access to it.

Local residents and many activists in Kyrgyzstan opposed the transfer of the reservoirs to Uzbekistan. The Kempir-Abad is known under the name Andijan reservoir.

In the parliament of Kyrgyzstan, a number of deputies also spoke out against the decision of the authorities, and the chairman of the profile committee of the parliament, Chyngyz Aidarbekov, refused to sign the corresponding decision of the committee.

After some time, he was deprived of the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Five parliamentary factions are proposing to remove Aidarbekov from the post of chairman of the Committee.
