Kazakhstan’s economic resilience depends on water scarcity

Kazakhstan has proposed a draft of a new concept of the Water Code of the country. According to the authors of the project, by 2030 the economic losses of Kazakhstan due to the growing shortage of water can reach about $6-7 billion. Water shortage can affect the entire economy of the country due to the costs associated with a potential shortage of water.

The Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan proposes economic activity with more efficient use of water, the LS website wrote.

At the same time, it was calculated that the implementation of such a concept would require from $500 million to $1 billion per year, which is 6-14 times less than potential losses.

With the current system of water use, a large amount of water has to be used to maintain the level of water basins, which are losing a lot of volume due to evaporation.

The demand of natural and economic systems for the water resources of Kazakhstan is about 64 billion cubic meters. At the same time, 44% of the inflow falls on transboundary rivers. This share may decrease significantly by 2030. In addition, the country’s resources are exposed to such external factors as global warming.

As a result of such problems, by 2030 the water deficit may reach 23 billion cubic meters. In addition to the shallowing of rivers and lake systems, there may be problems with interruptions in the water supply of settlements. The need to introduce new sources of resources will increase.
