Kazakhstan plans to increase its energy capacity

Joint-stock company Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna intends to implement 14 projects in the energy sector for a total amount of more than 3 trillion tenge, Kazinform reported.

“As of today, the Fund has launched the implementation of 6 priority projects. In addition, the fund plans to implement 14 projects totaling more than 3 trillion tenge. Given the long construction time of the NPP, it will be necessary to build new coal-fired generation facilities in the Ekibastuz energy hub. The issue of building a new state district power station is being considered,” said Almasadam Satkaliyev, Chairman of the Board of the Fund.

According to the energy balance of Kazakhstan, the need for electric power by 2035 is expected to be about 27 GW. Today, the available capacity of the existing stations in Kazakhstan is over 16 thousand MW. Until 2035, construction of about 17 GW of new basic flexible and renewable energy sources will be required, of which about 11 GW is planned to be implemented by the fund.

The need for new energy capacities in Kazakhstan is increasing due to the growth of industrial enterprises. The issue of building a nuclear power plant is on the agenda of the country’s energy development.
