Kazakhstan pays Kyrgyzstan for water in summer 2022

Kazakhstan will allocate funds to pay Kyrgyzstan for the supplied water during the summer irrigation season.

The corresponding draft Resolution “On the allocation of funds from the reserve of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan” was prepared by the Committee on Water Resources of the Government of Kazakhstan, Zakon.kz reports.

In accordance with the document, the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan will be allocated funds from the reserve of the government of the country provided for in the republican budget for 2022 for urgent expenses.

The amount of allocated money is 1 billion 536 million 619 thousand 913 tenge or about $3.2 million, which will be used to pay for services for the exchange of electricity with Kyrgyzstan in the amount of 608 million 132 thousand 980 kilowatt-hours for the supplied water to agricultural producers of the Turkestan region. Water was supplied from the Kazakhstani part of the Dostyk interstate canal in June, July and August 2022.

This decision made it possible to provide irrigated lands with irrigation water in a timely manner, preserve the products of agricultural producers of the Zhetysay and Maktaaral districts of the Turkestan region, increase their competitiveness and prevent social tensions in the region.

The document is posted on the Open NLA website for public discussion until November 3.

Kazakhstan, as well as Uzbekistan, is a country whose irrigation is dependent on water supplies from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
