Kazakhstan claims to host Ice Hockey World Championship

Kazakhstan has applied to host the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2027, Sports.kz reports.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced that it has received letters of application for hosting the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship from Germany, Kazakhstan and Norway.

Unlike Germany and Norway, Kazakhstan has never hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship at the highest level before. But in the application of Kazakhstan there are two large facilities: Barys Arena for 11,400 seats in Astana and Almaty Arena for 12,500 seats in Almaty.

Barys Arena is the home ground for the KHL team Barys Astana and hosted the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship, Division I, Group A. Then the Kazakh team reached the top division and has remained there ever since. Almaty Arena was opened for the Winter Universiade 2017, where hockey tournaments were held.

The three candidates will now work on a detailed plan for the tender project in the coming months, followed by a presentation of the tender proposal at IIHF headquarters and a site visit. The 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship will be scheduled at the 2023 IIHF Annual Congress in Tampere, Finland at the end of May 2023.
