Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan discuss transition of oil

Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are negotiating on the possibilities of transporting oil from Kazakhstan through the territory of Azerbaijan, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of KazMunayGas JSC Dauren Karabayev said during a briefing in Nur-Sultan, Azerbaijani Trend News Agency said.

He noted that discussions with Azerbaijan are being held at various levels, including state level and national companies level.

“The details still need to be discussed. Kazakhstan will report on this issue in more detail after reaching agreements with Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has two oil pipelines – Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Supsa – which can potentially be used to transport Kazakh oil,” Karabayev said.

Kazakhstan has been negotiating with Azerbaijan to transport its oil to the West through Azerbaijan for a long time. Up to this point, Kazakhstan had delivered its produced oil to Western markets through the Russian port of Novorossiysk.

Meanwhile, in recent months, the Kazakh oil delivery company KTK reported four cases of suspension of transit through the Russian port for various reasons. Mostly technical reasons were cited.

But, many politicians and experts associate such a frequent interruption with the position of Kazakhstan regarding Russia’s Special Military Operation in Ukraine and the statement of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Tokayev about not recognizing the republics in the Donbass.
