Turkmenistan and Afghanistan reach important agreement on TAPI

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have agreed on joint action plans to build a gas pipeline, distribute gas to industrial parks and residents of Herat, and convert natural gas to liquefied petroleum gas, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said.

The Afghan delegation visited Ashgabat and discussed important issues related to the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline under construction, Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Shafai Azam said.

The Ministry of Economic Development of Afghanistan also spoke about TAPI.

“The TAPI project is one of the important and fundamental projects that can promote political interaction, regional cooperation and regional development,” said Abdul Rahman Habib, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Economic Development.

The TAPI gas pipeline project, designed to deliver Turkmen gas to Afghanistan and South Asian countries, has recently gained particular relevance. This is due to the difficult situation in the global oil and gas market on the eve of winter.

The current situation in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market shows the developing countries of Asia that it is most beneficial for them to supply pipeline gas under long-term contracts. This is what Turkmenistan offers to its partners in South Asia, and this will be provided by the TAPI gas pipeline if it is laid, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
