EAEU is to transfer mutual settlements to national currencies of Union countries

The EAEU countries will discuss the issue of expanding the use of the national currencies of the Union for settlements within the framework of mutual trade in Kyrgyzstan’s Cholpon-Ata town on August 25-26. This proposal was made by Russia.

The draft resolution with recommendations on the use of national currencies is submitted by Russia. The Russian team is to announce the idea during a meeting in Cholpon-Ata town, Russian RBK reported.

The proposal to expand the use of the national currencies of the EAEU countries in the implementation of settlements in mutual trade will be made by Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov, RBK said.

According to the Russian side, the share of national currencies in mutual settlements within the EAEU in 2022 is 74%. Of these, the lion’s share of settlements in rubles in 2021 amounted to 71.5% of transactions, 26.2% – in dollars and euros, and among the currencies of other EAEU countries – 1.4% in tenge and 0.2% in Belarusian rubles.

In addition, Russia proposes ensuring intersystem interaction of national payment card systems of the EAEU member states. Now four of the five countries of the union have national payment card systems (Kazakhstan is working on its creation). These are “Armenian Card” in Armenia, “Belkart” in Belarus, “Elkart” in Kyrgyzstan, “Mir” in Russia. An indicator of the solution of the problem will be the possibility of accepting cards of national payment systems in any country of the Union.

EAEU includes five countries Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
