During the investigation of the cases of Kairat Satybaldy – the nephew of the first president of Kazakhstan – as well as his wife Gulmira and businessman Kairat Boranbaev, the republic’s law enforcement agencies managed to recover about 230 billion tenge ($480.9 million). This was reported in the commission on countering the illegal concentration of economic resources, Ferghana writes .
The funds were reimbursed, “including by returning them from foreign jurisdictions,” the message says.
For example, in a case investigated by the Anti-Corruption Service, the defendants voluntarily returned over $170 million from Luxembourg. The investigating authority for theft of property of Kazakhtelecom JSC, Transport Service Center JSC and other companies reimbursed about 36 billion tenge ($75 million), reported to the commission.
During the investigation of the case against Boranbaev in KazMunayGas JSC, the Financial Monitoring Agency reimbursed about 11.3 billion tenge ($23.6 million).
In the Zhambyl region, as part of a criminal case on the fact of misappropriation and embezzlement of entrusted property, 2.2 billion tenge ($4.6 million) was reimbursed to the state organization TarazEnergosbyt JSC.
“In the case of the ROP Operator, the theft of about 180 billion tenge ($376 million) was prevented, of which about 100 billion ($209 million) were directed to preferential car loans,” the message says.
Work on the identification, arrest and confiscation of criminal assets of suspects, including those abroad, continues.
On March 13, the Anti-Corruption Service detained Satybaldy on suspicion of abuse of power and embezzlement of Kazakhtelecom JSC funds. On March 15, Nur-Sultan’s specialized inter-district investigative court authorized his arrest for two months.
On March 17, it turned out that Nazarbayev’s nephew was charged with not only embezzlement, but also raiding. This was announced after the detention and subsequent arrest of Satybaldy’s ex-wife, Gulmira.
Kairat Boranbayev, like Nazarbayev’s nephew, was in the top 50 richest and most influential businessmen in Kazakhstan. His daughter was married to the grandson of Nursultan Nazarbayev, Aisultan, who died in August 2020. The press service of the Financial Monitoring Agency announced the detention and arrest of Boranbaev on March 17, 2022, although the first reports appeared two days earlier. The businessman was charged with embezzlement on an especially large scale in the quasi-public sector.
During the investigation, the arrest of both Satybaldyuly and Boranbaev was extended several times by the court.
Until recently, ROP Operator LLP collected a recycling fee from importers and manufacturers in Kazakhstan. This company was associated in the media with Aliya Nazarbayeva, the youngest daughter of the former president. On January 19 of this year, the government terminated the activities of the LLP for the administration of the waste collection, and its assets were transferred to the ownership of the state.
This happened after the company’s activities were criticized by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Later, criminal cases were initiated against the management of the LLP.
