Asia+: How the World Bank supports the largest hydroelectric power station in Tajikistan

In November, the launch of the first unit at the Nurek station will turn half a century old.

The World Bank published a summary of data on Tajikistan’s largest hydroelectric power plant, the Nurek HPP, as well as financial support for the rehabilitation of this plant.

Rehabilitation of the Nurek HPP, which generates about half of the electricity produced in the republic, began in 2007.

The first phase of the project, in which the World Bank Group invested $226 million ($56.6 million grant, $169 million highly concessional loan), is expected to end in 2023.

In the second phase (2022-2030), the World Bank Group will invest $115 million. The provision of this grant funding from the International Development Association (a member of the World Bank Group that provides grants to the world’s poorest countries) has already been approved.

In mid-November of this year, exactly half a century will be celebrated since the start of operation of the Nurek HPP. The launch of the first hydraulic unit took place on November 15, 1972; the station was fully commissioned at the end of 1979.
