Kyrgyz Parliament elects new speaker

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan has elected a new speaker after the resignation of the former chairman, Talant Mamytov. He announced his resignation at today’s meeting of Parliament and the announcement that he will remain a simple MP.

Nurlanbek Shakiev from the Ata-Jurt faction was elected as the new speaker of the parliament.

During the secret ballot, 80 deputies voted for Shakiev’s candidacy, 6 voted against, one ballot was declared invalid. In total, 87 deputies out of 90 took part in the voting.

Shakiev is known in big politics in Kyrgyzstan for being the press secretary of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who fled the country after the 2010 revolution. He also served as minister of culture and information and Presidential adviser during the Bakiyev period.
