Turkmenistan appeals to Turkey to introduce visas for its citizens

The official authorities of Turkmenistan appealed to Turkey to introduce visas for its citizens.

“In order to improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules for the stay of citizens of Turkmenistan in the Republic of Turkey, the Turkmen side appealed to Turkish side with a request to introduce on a temporary basis a visa regime of various categories for citizens of Turkmenistan,” the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

At the end of May 2022, Ashgabat and Ankara discussed the possibility of canceling the visa-free entry regime for Turkmen citizens to Turkey, Chronicles of Turkmenistan reporteds.

According to independent sources of Turkmenistan, a Turkish company will be opened in Ashgabat, which is engaged in the issuance of visas of all categories to Turkey: study, work, medical and tourist purposes.

According to the plan, the package of documents required for departure will be transferred first to the migration service of Turkmenistan. If the departure is approved there, then the documents will be sent to the Turkish consulate in Ashgabat.

In July, according to the source of the publication, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, at a meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat, spoke out against this idea categorically.

“The whole Turkic-speaking world comes to us freely, without visas, and we don’t want to restrict anyone,” Oktay said at then.

During the years of independence, Turkmenistan declared itself a neutral country and introduced a visa regime for all countries, including neighboring Turkish-speaking states.
