Trilateral meeting in Astana called for diplomacy on border disputes

Trilateral talks on the border dispute between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan took place in Astana with the participation of President Vladimir Putin, President Sadyr Zhaparov and President Emamoli Rahmon.

The meeting took place at the initiative of the President of Russia. According to the information disseminated by the parties after the talks, the conflicting parties noted that they were committed to politico-diplomatic methods for resolving disputes and thanked President Putin for initiating the meeting.

The negotiations were held behind closed doors and upon their completion, the parties distributed their own press releases.

The Russian side described the results of the talks as follows: The Heads of State exchanged views on issues of regional security and stability in Central Asia.

During the meeting, the course of the negotiation process on the delimitation and demarcation of the Tajik-Kyrgyz state border was considered.

An agreement was reached to resolve emerging issues exclusively by political and diplomatic means, as well as to intensify the activities of government groups on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border and working groups of experts in strict accordance with previously reached agreements.

The press service of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported in particular the following: The Kyrgyz side adheres to the unchanging position on the need to resolve disputed issues exclusively by peaceful means and political and diplomatic methods, recalling the consequences of the armed aggression of the Tajik side.

President Zhaparov noted that Kyrgyzstan is committed to the mutually beneficial and speedy completion of the formation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border, which will become a guarantor of stability and good neighborliness.

The meeting of the presidents of Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan took place in Astana on October 13. The last and intence armed conflict on the border of the two countries in the Ferghana Valley took place on September 14-17, 2022, at the time when the summit of the SCO countries was held in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, in which the participants of the trilateral meeting in Astana took part.
