Turkish president cancels visa-free regime with Turkmenistan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the Resolution on the abolition of the simplified visa for citizens of Turkmenistan to Turkey.

The document was published on September 14 on the website of the Official Gazette of Turkey.

It became known on September 13 that the office of the Turkish company Gateway International located in Ashgabat will issue visas.

According to various media resources, in order to obtain a visa, citizens of Turkmenistan must register on the company’s website. However, the online visa process is not yet operational. Therefore, citizens wishing to leave for Turkey are already gathering near the building of the Turkish company.

On September 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan published on its website an appeal to the leadership of Turkey, in which it asked to introduce a visa regime for its citizens. The Turkmen Foreign Ministry explained this request by “the desire to improve and introduce on a systematic basis the rules for the stay of citizens of Turkmenistan in Turkey.

Turkish officials were against the introduction of a visa regime. Vice President Fuat Oktay, at a meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on July 1 in Ashgabat, said that Ankara does not want to restrict anyone, since “the entire Turkic-speaking world comes to us freely, without visas.

The public appeal of the Turkmen side, obviously, was the demand of Ankara, which thus shows that the initiative does not come from the Turkish authorities, according to the Chronicle portal.
