SCO countries to adopt Samarkand Declaration

The SCO Summit in Samarkand will be attended by the heads of 15 states and heads of 10 international structures. The approaches of the SCO states to solving topical global problems will be reflected in the final document – the Samarkand Declaration. It will also outline the priorities for the development of the organization for the coming period, People’s Daily said.

The SCO countries currently account for a quarter of the world’s GDP and half of the world’s population. At the summit, it is planned to sign a memorandum of commitment by Iran, opening the way to full membership in the organization, as well as to consider the application of Belarus for full membership.

Such interest in full-scale interaction with the SCO indicates the growth of the authority of the organization. As part of its expansion, memorandums will be signed on granting the status of a dialogue partner to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Corresponding applications were received from Bahrain and the Maldives too.

The upcoming summit marks the stage of the transformation of the Shanghai G8 into a rapidly developing global structure, a large family, while maintaining its inherent spirit of mutual respect, equality and trust, the newspaper said.

It is known that about three dozen documents have been prepared for consideration by the SCO heads of state on further strengthening multifaceted interaction between member states, and their list is being supplemented.

However, it is already obvious that the leaders of the countries will not ignore the worsening degradation in the field of energy and food security, the disruption of existing logistics routes and supply chains, and the deterioration of the socio-economic situation on the planet as a whole.

The SCO summit in Samarkand will last two days – September 15-16
