Iran signs memorandum on joining SCO

Iran signed a memorandum of commitment in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, opening the way for this country to become a member of the organization, a spokesman for the Uzbek Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.

The memorandum was signed during the SCO Summit in Samarkand on September 15, 2022.

“Today, a memorandum on Iran’s commitments to the SCO was signed. This paves the way for the country’s full membership in the SCO,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

He said that the document was signed by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming. The procedure for the entry of the Islamic Republic began at the summit in Dushanbe in September 2021.

At the next SCO Summit, Iran will take part as a full member of the Organization.

The day before, Egypt and Qatar signed memorandums on obtaining the status of dialogue partners.

The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the region as a powerful and stable country is important for the SCO. Iran’s entry into the group of participating countries will strengthen the SCO.

The SCO was founded in 1996 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Turkey is a dialogue partner of the SCO.

Prior to Uzbekistan’s accession to the SCO in 2001, the organization was called the Shanghai Five.
