Early Presidential election proposed in Kazakhstan

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed early presidential elections this fall. He voiced his proposal at a joint meeting of the two chambers of Parliament, where  he delivered a Message to the people of Kazakhstan, Zakon.kz reports.

“I propose to provide an early Presidential elections this autumn. To implement the phenomenon and comprehensive transformations on the way to a probable Just Kazakhstan, a new trusting spirit of the people is emerging. For me, the interests of the state are above all. Therefore, I am ready ещ shorten my term of appointment and go to early elections,”  Tokaev said.

He especially stressed that he proposes to introduce changes, according to which the President of the country will be elected for 7 years, but  only once.

The previous presidential elections were held on June 9, 2019, in which 77.4% of voters took part. Almost 71% of voters supported Tokayev.

On June 12, 2019 Tokayev was officially appointed to the post of head of state, and the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected president of Kazakhstan took place in Nur-Sultan.

Tokayev’s proposal was prompted by the aftermath of the January events of 2022, when discontent among the population in the west of the country quickly spread throughout the country. As a result of the tough measures taken, order was restored in the country, the initiators of the riots were convicted, and subsequently a new Constitution was adopted in the country.
