Turkmenistan to become member of OTS in November

Turkmenistan will be admitted to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) at the upcoming Summit of the heads of state of the organization on November 11 in Tashkent, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Chaushoglu said.

“Turkmenistan, which was previously an observer in the OTS, will become a full member on November 11 in Samarkand, where the summit of the organization is held. In this way, we hope to complete our family picture,” said Cavshuoglu, speaking to students at the University of Pamukkale on September 29, Anadolu news agency reported.

Meanwhile, a month ago, Turkmenistan officially asked Turkiye to cancel the visa-free regime for its citizens, the Chronicle of Turkmenistan portal reported. As a result, on September 13, Turkish President Recep Erdogan signed a corresponding decree, despite the fact that earlier the Turkish authorities were categorically against it.

Obviously, the full entry of Turkmenistan into the OTS was a condition for the abolition of visas between the countries, the Chronicle of Turkmenistan believes.

The OTS is not a military bloc, but its members raise issues of a military nature, among other things.

Previously, Turkmenistan showed no interest in joining the Turkic Council, explaining its unwillingness to become a member of its neutral status. In 2018, the Kazakhstani edition of Kursiv reported that Berdimuhamedov refused to come to the sixth summit of the organization, which was held in Kyrgyzstan, in the city of Cholpon-Ata.

In November 2021, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, in an interview with the Turkish TV channel TRT World, said that Turkmenistan is implementing all the provisions of the UN Resolution on the permanent neutrality of the country, and participation in the Council is associated with the desire to develop friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation with Turkic-speaking states.

The Turkic Council was established in October 2009. Its members are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkiye, as well as Hungary in observer status. It became the Organization of Turkic State in 2022 by the initiative of Tyrkiye.

Among the goals of the organization: strengthening the mutual trust of the participants, developing common positions on foreign policy issues, coordination in the fight against terrorism, development of mutual trade and investment, cooperation in scientific, information and tourism spheres.
