CSTO welcomes settlement of conflict between Bishkek and Dushanbe

The CSTO Secretariat welcomes the signing by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan of a protocol on the settlement of the situation on the border, the organization said, RIA Novosti reported.

On Sunday, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a protocol to end the conflict and resolve the situation on the border of the two states.

“The CSTO Secretariat welcomes the signing by the heads of the competent authorities of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan of the protocol of the meeting of delegations of the Kyrgyz and Tajik sides to stabilize the situation in the border areas. We positively assess the agreement of the parties to speed up work aimed at completing the project description of the line of passage of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border,” it says in a message posted on the CSTO Telegram channel.

“We believe that the agreement of the parties not to set up border posts near the section of the border where military clashes took place will positively affect the stabilization of the situation on the border. Any attempts to use force to resolve disputed issues are unacceptable, all border disputes must be resolved through political and diplomatic means,” – indicated in the comments.

The CSTO expressed hope that the signed protocol would be implemented and peace and mutual understanding would be restored on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Large-scale clashes on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan began on the morning of September 16. The parties accused each other of shelling. Fierce fighting between the military of the two countries lasted all day along almost the entire perimeter of the border. A ceasefire was achieved only by nightfall. On the morning of September 17, intermittent clashes resumed. The parties accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. The shooting stopped only towards evening.

The Kyrgyz side reported 62 dead and 198 injured of its citizens as a result of clashes. Tajikistan announced 41 dead and 30 injured.

On Sunday, September 25, representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a protocol on the settlement of the situation, in which they agreed to stop conflicts on the border and speed up the process of delimitation and demarcation of the state border. Also, according to the document, the parties agreed to mothball four border points on each of the parties in those places where conflicts most often occurred.
