Kazakhstan officially reacts to referendum in Ukraine

Kazakhstan has officially announced that it will adhere to the principle of the territorial integrity of statesthe representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan said in the statement on the past referenda on joining Russia of LPR, DPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine.

“As for holding referendums on joining Russia of the self-proclaimed states of the LPR and DPR and the military administrations of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, Kazakhstan proceeds from the principles of the territorial integrity of states, their sovereign equality and peaceful coexistence. Our president has repeatedly, including in his recent speech from the UN rostrum, clearly stated the importance of steadfast observance of the principle of international law, which is based on the charter of this world universal organization,” official representative of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry Aibek Smadiyarov said.

He said that the UN Charter speaks of the responsibility of the UN member states for maintaining peace and respecting the territorial integrity of states.

“We reaffirm our readiness to render all possible assistance to the establishment of a political dialogue. At the same time, our country considers the preservation of stability both at the regional and global levels to be the most important task,” Smadiyarov said.

At the St. Petersburg Economic Forum this summer, Kazakh President Tokayev said what he thinks about the self-proclaimed republics of the LPR and DPR. “Modern international law is the UN charter. But two UN principles came into conflict – the integrity of the state and the right of the nation to self-determination. And as soon as these principles contradict each other, there are different interpretations. If the right of a nation to self-determination is realized, then more than 500 states will arise on earth and there will be chaos. For this reason, we do not recognize either Taiwan, or Kosovo, or South Ossetia, or Abkhazia. Apparently, this principle will be applied to quasi-state associations, which, in our opinion, are Luhansk and Donetsk,” Tokayev replied then.

From September 23 to 27, 2022, referendums were held in the LPR, DPR, as well as in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine on joining Russia. According to the preliminary results of the vote, two-thirds of the referendum participants support the entry of their regions into Russia.
