Over third of working Uzbeks employed in informal sector

More than 41% of the able-bodied population of Uzbekistan is employed in the informal sector,
Head of Department of the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of Uzbekistan Zohidjon Askarov told.

“According to the recommendations of the International Labor Organization, the share of the population employed in the informal sector of the economy should not exceed 15%. According to our statistics, 5.7 million people are currently employed in the informal sector in Uzbekistan. This is more than 41% of the total of the able-bodied population of Uzbekistan. Until 2026, we intend to reduce this share to 30%,” Askarov said in a comment to the Uzbekistan-24 TV channel.

The population of Uzbekistan is approaching 38 million people. Every year, from 3 to 4 million people of working age leave for labor migration to work. The vast majority of Uzbek migrants go to work to Russia and Kazakhstan.
