Kyrgyzstan buys more electricity from Turkmenistan than planned

In the first six months of 2022, Kyrgyzstan imported 1.7 billion kWh of electricity from Turkmenistan for $45.6 million, the Statistics Committee of Kyrgyzstan announced. 

Kyrgyzstan has planned to buy electricity for this year it total 1.5 billion kWh, the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Energy and Industry of Kyrgyzstan Tilek Aitaliev said in May, 2022.  

For what reason Kyrgyzstan has significantly increased the import of electricity, is not specified.

From the data provided by Trend, it appears that the price was $0.0268 per kWh. However, it is obvious that rounded figures are presented, respectively, the cost of electricity is also approximate.

Turkmenistan has been exporting electricity to Kyrgyzstan in transit through Uzbekistan since August 2021. Last year, according to the expert’s calculations, the cost of 1 kWh was 2.05 Kyrgyz soms or $0.02422. Turkmenistan received $0.02 per kWh, and the remaining $0.00422 was payment to Uzbekistan for transit.
